Flood Cleanup in Montebello, CA 90640

Much of Montebello stands on land that was drilled for oil before it was built out, and the hills above the flats still show that history. When a line lets go inside a 1940s bungalow, a local crew can be pulling water out the same day.

Why Water Damage Is Common in Montebello

Montebello incorporated in 1920 on ground taken from the old rancho grants between the Rio Hondo and the San Gabriel River, and it takes its name from the low hills on the northern edge of town. Those hills held one of the busiest urban oil fields in the region from the 1910s onward, and derricks stood within sight of the small stucco houses and duplexes that filled the flats after the Second World War. The street grid is tight, the driveways were widened long after they were first poured, and many of the supply runs beneath them are galvanised steel or early copper. Along Whittier and Beverly the low commercial buildings date from the same decades. The ground is almost perfectly flat and drains toward the Rio Hondo channel, so a broken main or a hard storm has very little fall to work with, and the oldest blocks were laid out well before the current storm drain system.

Immediate Steps to Take

  • 1Shut off the main water supply immediately if the source is a burst pipe or plumbing failure.
  • 2Document all damage with photos and notes for your insurance claim before any cleanup begins.
  • 3Move valuable items, electronics, and important documents to a dry, safe area if it is safe to do so.
