Emergency Water Extraction in North Hills, CA 91343

North Hills filled in during a handful of post-war years, and the ground under it has been shaken and repaired since. A failed line beneath a slab here can run a long way before anyone notices.

Why Water Damage Is Common in North Hills

North Hills occupies the north-central floor of the San Fernando Valley, land that was still walnut and citrus orchard when the first tracts went up in the 1950s under the older name Sepulveda. Nearly every block was finished within the same decade on concrete slabs, which means the copper and galvanised lines inside those houses are letting go on roughly the same schedule today, and the 1994 earthquake centred nearby split service connections across the neighbourhood and left a large number of patched joints behind. The soil is hardpan and compacted alluvium that refuses to absorb a spill, so water from a break travels under flooring, along the trench of an old utility run, and into the garage next door rather than soaking away where it started.

Immediate Steps to Take

  • 1Move vehicles and valuables to higher ground if flooding is approaching.
  • 2Shut off the main water supply and electrical breakers if water has entered the home.
  • 3Document everything with photos and call for professional water extraction right away.
